Well all of a sudden it is that time of year again!!!! I have started getting things together for Christmas-gifts & cards anyway.  I plan to do some shopping in Winter Harbor this Thursday night-December 5th.  It is an excellent time to help out artisans and small business while also getting some wonderful gifts.   Not only shopping but the Woman’s Club is also hosting a chilli dinner-it is always delicious and homemade!!!!  An evening of holiday cheer that I hope will build up my enthusiasm.

Not sure when the house will be hit with decorations.  I have begun to pack up the wax, no more encaustic painting until next summer.  I will miss this medium but Florida is not a great place to do this work.  Hope to see a lot of folks in Winter Harbor on Thursday.

This encaustic piece is titled “Lost”.  “Lost” has many connotations in life and in this work.  This time of year I often reflect back on folks who have been part of my life and have passed away, now existing only in memories.  I hope this piece honors one very long and  cherished friendship that was cut short by cancer.  My friend for about 48 years, Lucille died in December 2001.  Lucille and Carol are in this work as 8 year old girls standing in front of 190 Main, almost lost in the trees.

Her death seems like just yesterday in so many ways and an eternity in others.  I realize that there are not very many people that we share so much history with and who were always there for you.  Not many people have traveled on the path through our lives and shared our most intimate dreams, hopes, secrets and pain.  This is a loss that everyone does experience but we sometimes do not realize the enormity of it until much later.  Maybe that is nature’s way of protecting us, offering us a way to endure.

“Lost” has been accepted into a juried art show in Mt. Dora, Florida called Big Bad Wax.    It will be on the UPS truck very soon.  The art will be gone but the memories will always be close by.

This combination of three views make up one picture, called a triptych.  In this group the encaustic paintings are done from photographs taken by me on the “flat rocks” on Grindstone Neck in Winter Harbor.  View left is looking east towards Anvil, Turtle Island view in the middle, and the Right painting is looking West towards Cadillac.

This group is being donated to a special fund raising auction being held at the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell, Maine.  These pieces would be listed for $200- each if I were selling them but every painting at the Auction will be sold for $100-  There will be many pieces for people to choose from and this should be a great opportunity to buy great art at a low price and for the Gallery to raise funds.  They will have online shopping or shopping at the Gallery located at 190 Water St. in Hallowell.  I believe that it will be first and highest bid that will win the art-but everything will sell for no more then $100-  Good Luck!!!
